Thank you to all of our friends who participated in and supported our Mile for Mothers Walk!
Saturday, May 1st was an extraordinary day in the City of Long Beach. The weather reached a high of 86 degrees and the climate was just right for a "Mile for Mothers" walk on the Boardwalk. The National Association of Mothers' Centers hosted a themed "Walk a mile in mom's shoes" event on the Boardwalk with over 300 participants walking the boardwalk and sharing in the fun festivities.
This family event which took place just a week before Mother's Day celebrated and highlighted the important work of mothering with a wall of honor which displayed dozens of shoes hanging in honor of or in memory of mothers.
The event was attend by many of the local Mothers' Center members and alums. Mothers' Centers of Northport, Long Beach, SW Nassau and Midshore Mothers' Center hosted activities for the children that were a big hit. Also participating were members from Mothers' Center of Forest Hills, South Country Library, the South Shore and Unity Circle Mothers' Center of Hempstead and New Cassel. We were also excited to have with us alums from Sunrise, Staten Island and Westbury Mothers' Centers.
Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg with his wife and City of Long Beach Councilman Michael Fagen along with his children Jack and Michael presented the NAMC and the local Mothers' Center of the Long Beach Library that was celebrating their 5th Anniversary with certificates of Recognition.
This walk was the first in a series of international Mile for Mothers events being organized by Mothers' Center members in many countries across the globe during the month of May including Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Germany, Uganda, Russia and Bulgaria.
(L)Three generations: Lauren Torre, Lori Zlotoff and Leanne Aurigemma, who met at the Mothers' Center when their moms brought them there as infants, were reunited at the walk, which they attended with their moms, Linda Juergens and Karen Horowitz, and their daughters, Nicolette, Abigail and Caitlin
