"Instantly, I felt connected. I saw moms who were in the same stage of life, also needing assistance and affirmation Not only did I find answers, I felt wanted and needed. I made friends. True friends. My kids made friends. Others valued my opinion as a mom." |

In 1993, after the Mothers' Center program had been under the umbrella of Family Service Association of Nassau County for 18 years, the NAMC was born, became incorporated, got its own non-profit status and composed the mission statement that has been proudly displayed ever since and that has informed our work: ... to enable members to be effective in using their individual & collective knowledge & experience as catalysts for personal & societal changes that benefit mothers and families.
While the NAMC is still committed to this focus, this statement has recently been designated as our organization's vision statement and a new mission statement, which speaks in more concrete terms, was crafted. The premise behind the new mission is that the experience of mothers is inadequately attended to in our society, and the NAMC is doing something about it. Our new mission statement reads:
The National Association of Mothers' Centers (NAMC) values the important work of mothering and addresses the needs of mothers by: - developing a network of supportive communities for mothers -advocating for mothers to ensure their right to physical, psychological, social and economic well-being - fostering the exchange of maternal wisdom, and - pioneering the mothers movement.
