In 1973, four women associated with the Family Service Association in Nassau County, New York, developed a questionnaire to talk about their experiences as mothers: their pregnancies, their first year with their new infants, how their lives had changed. They chose the name Mothers’ Center and invited other women to come.
Today there are more than 100 thriving centers in the United States. We were the first in Georgia. In the early summer of 1981, an Athens mother of one young child heard about the Mothers’ Center of New York and called their toll-free number for information. A handful of others joined her, meeting in one member’s basement, and our Center had its beginning. In the spring of 1987, we became The Athens Mothers’ Center, Inc.
