Embracing Adolescence
Nurturing Positive Parent-Teen Relationships
Tuesday, March 31, 2009
As with every new generation of parents, we look at young people and think… “What happened? Who are you? It wasn’t like this when I was young.” This common predicament is one that every parent must face and struggle through. This era of adolescence, however, is facing a wave of issues and challenges that are so new and pervasive that there are no existing standards to help guide us in our understanding of how to raise healthy teenagers.
This talk will address what some of those factors are, and how parents can participate in developing the most positive relationships with their adolescent children. Participants will be invited to engage in the discussion and share their challenges and experiences.
Neela M. Lockel is currently the Director of Continuing Education and Professional Development at the Adelphi University School of Social Work. She holds an MSW from Fordham University and an MPA from New York University. Over the last 15 years, she has been working with families and children as a direct service provider, therapist, advocate, parent educator and administrator. She has focused primarily on services around the needs of high-risk, mentally ill and homeless adolescents.
