Today and Tomorrow: A Halloween Note to My Daughter

Authors Note: I often think it is easier to express my own emotions as a parent through short letters to my children. This letter was inspired threefold by: my daughter, the forthcoming Halloween season and (in many ways) the political climate surrounding a presidential election year.

To my daughter:

Today you are the Statue of Liberty.
Tomorrow you could be the President.
(I have no doubt!)

Today you are filled with dreams.
Tomorrow you could potentially reach them.
(So reach high and reach often!)

Today you are young.
Yet tomorrow you may only be young at heart.
(Both do have their advantages - I promise!)

Today you may have found confidence.
But tomorrow you could be fighting fear.
(Remember, fighting through your fears helps to build your confidence.)

Today you might want to do it all, however tomorrow feel as though you don’t think you can.
Today you might have a smile on your face, but tomorrow find it’s turned itself upside down again.
(Admittedly it could rain for days, but keep your head up in search of that break in the clouds.)

Today, tomorrow, this decade or next, regardless of your dreams, your age, your confidence or your fears, what I want you to know - is that your future is in your hands.

And even though life may be filled with some unfortunate tricks,
It can also be filled with an abundance of treats.
(And you are undoubtedly one of my life’s treats!)

Happy Halloween!

Love Always,
Your Mom

In the concession line at a recent girl scout outing, Tessa announced she’d like to buy all her friends some candy. Since we had all met to eat prior to the game, I hadn’t brought a lot of cash with me and told her we’d have to see. While pulling a few dollars out of her little wallet she replied, “don’t worry Mommy, I got it covered!”

My husband and I just looked at each and smiled. It was just such a sweet gesture and gave me hope that though some days are long and crazy, we must be doing something right :)

This letter is such a great “treat” for your daughter to refer to over the years. Thanks for sharing!

That is such a wonderful small moment to be proud of Tatum. Sometimes it is the little moments that make the biggest impact on us as parents (and in general!)
