May 14 2009: The Power of Family Tradition and Rituals

Written as a summary of workshop conducted by Pam Mele at "Connections Count" Regional Conference

When Pam Mele asked people to think about their most precious memories of growing up - the times that brought them the greatest joy - it was almost unanimous that the times that came to mind were connected to special family times spent together.  For Pam's family, it was the "Mele dinners" complete with candlelight and conversation about the day.

While many parents feel pressure to work hard and save for that "special" family vacation to Disney or some other desirable destination, what most of us don't realize is that it is the day to day quality time we spend with our children that speaks to their hearts the most and becomes their source of strength and inspiration when they meet the challenges of life head on.

Whether it is the way you celebrate birthdays and holidays, or putting time aside in the evenings to play a game, or movie night or evening walks in the neighborhood or [your family ritual here], the times that make the biggest difference in your children's lives are the times that cost nothing, yet are priceless.
