Nothing Like a Bag of Doritos after Yoga Class (Guest post by Delia Serrano)

Balance.
Impossible I say.
Wait… maybe not?

At least that is the conclusion that Delia Serrano (very humorously) came to when she decided to “explore her thoughts” while eating a bag of Doritos after her Mothers’ Center yoga class.

Delia – the mother of three girls ages 18, 14 and 5 – has been a member of the Mothers’ Center of Southwest Nassau (located in East Rockaway, New York) for nearly 10 years. In addition to raising 3 children, Delia has worked part-time as an administrator for her husband’s family physician private practice (after leaving her job in Human Resources in 2001) and is proud to have just passed her New York State Realtor exam. She looks forward to a new career path when her youngest starts Kindergarten this September.

Delia has also served leadership roles within the local Girl Scout organization, facilitated various groups at the Mothers’ Center of Southwest Nassau and co-facilitated a Spanish-speaking Mothers’ Center library group in Port Washington, New York.

The below, all-too-true recollection of Delia’s “debating inner voice” was first published in this summer’s edition of the Mothers’ Center of Southwest Nassau Newsletter. I shook my head and laughed out loud in absolute understanding and appreciation of her “stream of consciousness”.

I am thinking many of us have had this very same conversation (or a close rendition of it). Continue reading to see if you relate!

“Nothing Like a Bag of Doritos after Yoga Class…”
by Delia Serrano

I was going to post these nine little words on Facebook just to see if I would get a chuckle or two, but then I decided the phrase needed a little exploring – so instead I thought I’d explore it with all of you (the most non-judgmental group I know).

Here we go…

Inner Conversations

I have to tell you, I am REALLY enjoying these Doritos with my tall glass of calcium-filled, iced, organic milk. And, I genuinely enjoyed my Yoga Class that I just finished up.

Is THAT really bad? Really?
Because, I’m not sure…

I am feeding my heart and my soul.
(I truly wanted the Doritos!)

I am making a mind-body connection as well.
(I am!)

I know I am making this mind-body connection because I’m fueling my raging hormones.
(Hormones do like salt, don’t they?)

Wait… How much salt do these darn things have anyway? Let’s look.

OMG. 320mg!
(Well if that doesn’t feed my hormones, nothing will.)

I definitely don’t want to look at the label again, but then maybe I should…

Serving Size = One Package.
(Okay that’s real easy! No problem Delia! How long did that take to eat? Actually, quite a while. I’m savoring these little pieces of crunchy heaven sitting here on this pretty Cinderella plate.)

Next. Calories = 260.
(Okay, not so bad.)

Here’s the zinger: Total Fat = 13g
(ugh!) I can almost hear my core rebelling, saying:

“Hey Delia, we just did all that great work! Why are you messing it all up?”

But wait, there’s good news!

  • Dietary Fiber = 3g (my proctologist will be happy)
  • Vitamin B6 (good for the sex life…woo hoo!)
  • Magnesium and Phosphorous (I know those are good too, I just can’t remember why)

Well then, there’s some good and some bad. It all evens itself out. (Right?)

Just an hour ago, I meditated, completed several vinyasas, bravely held a handful of balance poses, challenged my core, twisted, and truly left behind the rumblings of my mind while in chavasana all on the 2nd floor of our beloved Mother’s Center.

I thought maybe that this intended Facebook statement (turned exploration) was going to be self-reproach, but now I see it differently.

It’s a message of balance.
A message of: It’s O.K. You’re O.K.

I am, in fact, aware of what I am putting in my body as well as what I’m doing for my body and my mind. When I think about it, awareness is a REALLY good thing.

I am in the present and there’s some balance – balance in the form of a bag of Doritos and a really good Friday morning Yoga Class!

Delia, thank you so much for allowing us to share your “inner thoughts” here on the Mothers Central Blog. I DO completely relate to your story above and have had the same silent conversations to myself many-a-time. Your post is a great reminder to not beat ourselves up too much and to think about balance. Doritos and Yoga together (I think!) makes PERFECT sense :)

I am so happy you enjoyed it Kate and am thankful for the opportunity to share it. While reading it this morning, it occurred to me that I should explore my inner thoughts more often, perhaps even listen to them once in awhile! Happy 4th of July!

I can sure relate Delia. But I definitely need to stick to the single serving bags or I can get into trouble.
